A very wild bird, who likes liberty

To commemorate International Women's Day 2024 I have produced a limited edition of six drypoint etchings celebrating Marianne North.

Marianne North, a pioneering botanist of the 19th century, made significant contributions to both science and art. Born in 1830, she defied societal expectations by embarking on solo expeditions to remote regions worldwide, carefully documenting plant species through her vibrant and detailed paintings. Her travels spanned diverse landscapes, from the lush jungles of India to the arid deserts of Australia, where she captured the beauty and diversity of flora previously unknown to many. North's remarkable achievements not only advanced botanical knowledge but also challenged gender norms of her time, demonstrating the power of determination and passion in the face of adversity. As we celebrate International Women's Day, I propose that we honour North's legacy as a pioneer who broke barriers and inspired future generations of women to pursue their passions fearlessly.

Drypoint etching is a printmaking technique in which lines are scratched into a plate using a sharp tool. The plate is then inked and wiped, with the ink remaining in the burrs and texture of the incised lines. When pressed onto paper using a printing press, the plate transfers the ink, creating a unique and expressive print characterised by its velvety lines and tonal variations.

Each image measures 30x40cm and is printed on high-quality 40x50cm Fabriano Rosaspina paper using Akua Intaglio Carbon Black ink.

I produced this very limited edition of six prints on a historical antique Intaglio Press. Manufactured in Germany in the 19th century, the press journeyed to England to produce giant nautical charts for the British Admiralty. In 1970 the press found it's home at Wolverhampton School of Art. It is currently on loan to Ikon Gallery as the centrepiece of their Start The Press exhibition. I had the incredible opportunity to use the press as part of the Stirchley Printworks takeover of Start The Press this week.

Each of these six prints is unique, displaying varying atmospheric tones and markings. They celebrate the enduring legacy of Marianne North while subtly narrating the story of their printing process and the remarkable press on which they were created.

The ink is still drying, but these prints are available to pre order now, for £50 with free shipping.
